A Little About Tequesta, Then and Now

A population of just over 5,600 residents gently spaced over 2.2 square miles make their homes in Tequesta, set at the northeastern tip of Palm Beach County.  Some of the village spills into Martin County, making Tequesta one of the few municipalities in Florida served by two counties. Two small tracts of the village are on Jupiter Island, one north and one south of lovely Coral Cove Park, which is owned by Palm Beach County.

The Village of Tequesta owes its founding to a man from Massachusetts, one Charles “Charlie” Martyn. Along with the celebrated financier John Hay “Jock” Whitney (whose family could trace itself back to the voyage of the  Mayflower) both men had a hand in developing the Jupiter Inlet Colony in the 1950s. But in 1955, Martyn struck out on his own, purchasing 350 acres of land north of the Jupiter Inlet Colony to build the Tequesta Country Club, which would later become the Village of Tequesta.  Tequesta was incorporated in 1957, and the Jupiter Inlet Colony in 1959, with history forever linking the two cities. It is said that Martyn named the village for the Tequesta indigenous tribes, some of the earliest inhabitants of the region. The truth is that it was the Jeaga tribe that had lived in the area, but Martyn preferred the name Tequesta and would not change it. Who could argue with him?

Today, Tequesta real estate offers some of the most sought after waterfront properties for sale in all of Palm Beach County, in the communities of Heritage Oaks, Turtle Creek, Tequesta Country Club, Riverside on the Loxahatchee, and Bay Harbor. For those looking into the carefree condo lifestyle, Tequesta real estate offers waterfront choices in the communities of Tequesta Cove, Tequesta Trace and Sandpointe Bay.

Enjoying Life in Tequesta, Florida

Many Tequesta residents find their way to nearby Jupiter Beach Park and Dubois Park to feed their need for outdoor life and recreation. For boaters, the Jupiter sandbar is a popular place to raft up your boat and socialize, while speeding out the Jupiter Inlet will quickly get you to some of the best big game fishing in the world. As the crow flies, The Village of Tequesta is less than a mile from the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean where you can enjoy some of the nation’s most beautiful beaches.  Whether you jump the waves on your Jet Ski or surf the waves back to shore, the beaches here will not disappoint. And for a taste of something completely different, boaters can find the Islands of the Bahamas just 50 nautical miles east of the Jupiter Inlet.

Nearby points of interest include Roger Dean Stadium in next-door Jupiter, hosting the Major League Baseball Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals during spring training season. Bountiful shopping opportunities can be found at the Gardens Mall in nearby Palm Beach Gardens, along with many other diverse options, about 25 minutes south of Tequesta. A fast two-hour drive and you’ll be in Orlando, FL, home of Walt Disney World and other various attractions of interest to your out-of-town guests (and maybe even your own kids!)

School children in Tequesta are included in the Palm Beach County School District, and attend school in the Town of Jupiter, a few minutes south of Tequesta. These schools include Limestone Creek Elementary, Jupiter Elementary, Jupiter Middle School and Jupiter High School, along with several other private school choices. The Village of Tequesta is just 10 minutes East of I-95 and the Florida Turnpike offering easy access both north and south for those commuting to neighboring municipalities. For fliers, the Palm Beach International Airport is 30 minutes south of Tequesta Florida, in addition to Fort Lauderdale International and Miami International Airports, both about an hour’s drive further south.

Last but hardly least, don’t forget the game of golf! For the avid golfer, Tequesta has three private clubs to accommodate all budgets and skill levels including Tequesta Country Club, Turtle Creek Club and Jupiter Hills Country Club. Outside of Tequesta, there are many more golf courses to be had, keeping everyone from pros to duffers happy.
