Hobe Sound, Florida Rich in History
What makes Hobe Sound the unique place it is? First, a little history. The Anastasia limestone formation (so named in 1912) found on the shores of Hobe Sound was deposited over 100,000 years ago between today’s St. Augustine and Palm Beach County. Over millennia, drifting seashells combined with sand solidified into coquina, a rock-like mixture of the two, which has been used as a coveted building material in Florida for over 400 years. Here in Hobe Sound, this rock formation can be seen above the sand, whereas most of the Anastasia formation is below ground or under the water. Geologically speaking, exactly why the rocks emerge here no one can say for sure. But we’re glad they do. They make Hobe Sound one of the most unusually beautiful natural locales in the state, and provide magnificent surroundings where residents enjoy an enviable quality of life.
Before the earliest European contacts of the 1600s, the indigenous Jobe (or Jove) peoples lived on the land. Spanish explorers called them Ho-bay, pronouncing the word according to Spanish language conventions. By 1699, the name Hobe was generally known and accepted, and land grants from Spain dating to 1815 gave rise to the modern day village of Hobe Sound, so named for the narrow passage of water where the Loxahatchee River and Atlantic Ocean converge.
Vibrant Downtown and Beautiful Parks are Hobe Sound Hallmarks
A compact but vibrant downtown features eclectic shops and a myriad of diverse options for dining. You’ll find boutiques, galleries and, throughout the year, community arts and recreation events that are open to all. Hobe Sound is especially fortunate to be home to the renowned 73 acre Blowing Rocks Preserve, (where the Anastasia formation is found) operated by The Nature Conservancy, and the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, over 1,000 acres of U.S.-protected land for coastal dwelling animal life and native vegetation. Both parks began formal operations in 1969. Today, they offer outstanding opportunities for educational and artistic experiences, informative workshops, and summer camps for children.
But no description of Hobe Sound would be complete without mentioning the over 11,000 acre Jonathan Dickinson State Park, located here since 1950. Built on the site of a former radar training school last used during World War II, this natural jewel offers a stunning setting for boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding and camping. Don’t forget to see Hobe Mountain while you are here. Topping out at 86 feet, it’s the highest point in Florida south of Lake Okeechobee.
Today’s Hobe Sound residents are served by a general aviation airport, Witham Field, located 10 miles to the north, and Palm Beach International Airport, about a half hour ride to the south. Hobe Sound real estate for sale includes everything from magnificent ocean front estates with million dollar views, golf communities, gated residences, single family homes, and condominiums ranging from luxury to moderate, many on or near the water.
In short, a great place to call home, raise a family, or spend time at your vacation home away from home. Let the experts at Frankel Realty Group be your guide to the very best Hobe Sound real estate for sale. You’ll be glad you did the day you start calling your very own piece of Hobe Sound real estate home.
